A miracle: the eye

Light rays are refracted several times by the cornea and the lens and are focussed for a sharp image on the retina. The retina converts these light rays into electrical signals, which the optic nerve sends to the brain, where they are processed and translated into the images.

The pupil, like an aperture, controls the amount of light entering the eye by changing its size. This process is managed by the muscles of the iris.

The so-called macula is located at the center of the retina. Here most of the light rays are bundled. This area is only a very small part of the retina (about 2 %). However, it is essential for our ability to read. The other 98 % of the retina represent our visual field and allow for seeing movements and objects in the middle and outer peripheral areas of our vision.
